Description: |
An introduction to the basic
elements of music combined with a survey of Western art music. |
| Course
Objectives: |
1)
To help the student obtain knowledge of the basic elements of
music.
2)
To introduce the student to the Western art music tradition and
trace its development from the Middle Ages to the present.
3)
To study the influence that politics, social structure, religion
and other factors had on music and other art forms.
4)
To provide students the opportunity to listen to and study music of
the Western art tradition through recorded music and live music
performances.
5)
To broaden the student's listening experience beyond the Western
tradition by including music of non-Western cultures.

A sequenced list of assignments
and projects arranged by course section or module with due dates if

Participation: |
Students are encouraged to visit
the course site at least twice a week. Discussions will occur asynchronously
over the bulletin board and some response from all students must occur
once a week. Chat sessions are encouraged to better build a community of
learners within the class. Your participation in chat rooms is optional. |
| Punctuality: |
All quizzes, exams and bulletin
board postings must be done in a timely manner and not be accepted after a
published deadline. |

Participation is required, Expected to communicate with other
students in team projects, Learn how to navigate in
WebCT. Log onto the course site no less than twice per week to keep abreast of course announcements.

Always include a subject line.
Remember without facial expressions some comments may be
taken the wrong way. Be careful in wording your emails. Use of emoticons
might be helpful in some cases.
Use standard fonts.
Do not send large attachments without permission.
Special formatting such as centering, audio messages,
tables, html, etc. should be avoided unless necessary to complete an
assignment or other communication.
Respect the privacy of other class members.

Review the discussion threads thoroughly before entering
the discussion. Be a lurker then a discussant. Try
to maintain threads by using the "Reply" button rather starting a new
topic.
Do not make insulting or inflammatory statements to other
members of the discussion group. Be respectful of other's ideas.
Be patient and read the comments of other group members
thoroughly before entering your remarks.
Be cooperative with group leaders in completing assigned
tasks.
Be positive and constructive in group discussions.
Respond in a thoughtful and timely manner.

Tennessee Board of Regents Virtual Library is available
to all students enrolled in the Regents Degree Program. Links
to library materials (such as electronic journals, databases,
interlibrary loans, digital reserves, dictionaries, encyclopedias, maps,
and librarian support) and Internet resources needed by learners to
complete online assignments and as background reading must be included
in all courses. |

Syllabus Changes

The instructor reserves the right
to make changes in the syllabus if necessary due to time constraints or other unforeseen
events. If this is necessary, members of the class will be notified as soon as
